Jason and Travis Kelce claim Russell Wilson makes the Steelers an ‘extremely dangerous’ team as they back QB to find best form again in Pittsburgh: ‘The only missing piece’
Travis and Jason Kelce believe the addition of Russell Wilson at quarterback makes the Pittsburgh Steelers an ‘extremely dangerous’ team heading into the 2024 season.
Wilson has signed a one-year contract with the Steelers after being cut by the Denver Broncos earlier this month, with his former team set to pay $38million of his salary in Pittsburgh.
The nine-time Pro Bowl and Super Bowl-winning quarterback endured a miserable stint in Denver, where he was only handed a five-year, $250m contract extension less than two years ago.
After initially enduring the worst season of his career and going 4-11 under Nathaniel Hackett, Wilson’s resurgence under Sean Payton proved short-lived before he was dropped for their final two games of the previous campaign.
The Broncos then made the costly decision to release him this offseason, which will set them back a record $89m in dead cap charges over the next two seasons.
Wilson will now look to resurrect his career with the Steelers, who went 10-7 last season amid their offensive struggles under head coach Mike Tomlin.
But with the former Seattle Seahawks star now under center, the Kelce brothers believe Pittsburgh has now found its ‘only missing piece’ to go with a defense which ranked as the joint-sixth highest scoring in the NFL last season.
Recently-retired Philadelphia Eagles center Jason said on his and Travis’ New Heights podcast: ‘Russell gets to start fresh here in Pittsburgh, he’s had proven success in his past.
‘Dude, this is like the only missing piece right now in Pittsburgh. If Russ is even close to the quarterback he used to be, this is an extremely dangerous team with what they’re working on the defensive side of the ball.’
Travis then added: ‘I don’t even know about “what he used to be”. That guy was still balling in Denver at times man, I’ve seen him dissect some teams and make some good throws. I mean, we lost to Denver I think in Denver last year.
‘I think Russ has a lot of good football left in him man. He’s got that “it” factor about him that we’ve seen so many times, and sure enough he’ll bring some veteran presence to that locker room.
‘We all know how good of a coach Tomlin is and how good that defense it is. So Steelers definitely just got better for sure.’
NFL fans were quick to label Wilson’s trade and contract extension with the Broncos the worst in football history following news of his release.
Denver chiefs tied him down to fresh terms worth a quarter-of-a-billion dollars just six months into his stint with the franchise, and before he’d even played a single down.
‘Hopefully we see him have some more success [in Pittsburgh] knowing that the Broncos wasn’t his best tenure,’ Travis also said.
Jason then replied: ‘It’s tough to know what happened out there in Denver.’
Before Travis continued: ‘Man, it’s football. It takes so f****ng much. So many things have to go right.
‘They got hit with some injuries and it just wasn’t as much of a match as everyone thought it would be.’
