There are no dates on the American sporting calendar – or any American calendar for that matter – quite like Super Bowl Sunday.

Every year without fail the country comes to a standstill as the season’s top two NFL teams battle it out for the prestigious Vince Lombardi Trophy, with millions across the globe throwing parties and tuning in for both the game itself and the famous half-time spectacle.

However, this year there is even more hype than usual around football’s end-of-season blockbuster thanks to the added element of Taylor Swift.

Swift has emerged as one of the biggest talking points in the NFL of late amid her whirlwind romance with Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, and the pop superstar is expected to be in Las Vegas this weekend when her man’s Kansas City grapples with the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII.

Not only are the Chiefs bidding to become the first team to retain the Lombardi Trophy since 2005, and the 49ers seeking their first Super Bowl win in nearly 30 years, but the Swift frenzy will also reach its peak when she takes her seat at Allegiant Stadium.

NFL broadcasters have drew the ire of diehard supporters throughout the season for frequently cutting to her in the stands, meaning the singer’s presence on Sunday is likely to further incense a number of fans watching on the box.

So is America fed up of the Swift and Kelce hype? And who does the public think will win Super Bowl LVIII? Dailymail.com spoke to fans on the ground in Vegas and New Yorkers to find out.

Taylor has been headline news whenever she’s flocked to Arrowhead or taken the road to watch Travis in action, and for some fans the obsession is driving them away from the sport.

‘I think I’m less interested now with her in it,’ said one girl in Times Square. ‘It’s kind of annoying.

‘But if they’re in love they’re in love, right!’

Yet over in Vegas, other Super Bowl fanatics are less irritated by the excessive coverage of Swift at Chiefs games.

‘That doesn’t even matter,’ said a 49ers supporter in Sin City for this weekend’s showpiece. ‘When we get on the field, that’s what matters.’

While a Chicago Bears fan soaking up some of the Vegas atmosphere admitted: ‘I think it adds a little more excitement to the whole thing. But we’re just sports fans.’

Others went as far to echo the sentiments of NFL commissioner Roger Goodell earlier this week, suggesting that Swift emerging as an influential figure can only be a positive thing for the sport.

‘It helps,’ insisted a Kansas City-supporting Vegas resident. ‘More eyes on the game of football is always best.’

While one San Francisco native said over in NYC: ‘I think it’s great for the sport, but Taylor’s gonna have to be ok being in second place Sunday! Taylor is America’s darling, everyone loves Taylor, so it’s more about: “Sorry, you’re not gonna win!”‘

Another man admitted: ‘They’ll show her in the audience a thousand times or whatever, but who cares? She’s pretty.’

For one woman in New York, however, the Swift hysteria has become tiresome to the point she is rooting for the Niners on Sunday.

‘I feel like I’m kind of over the Chiefs,’ she said. ‘It should be about football, not Taylor.’

San Francisco fans are full of confidence ahead of their showdown with Kansas City, despite Patrick Mahomes and Co reaching this stage of the playoffs four times in the last five years.

Quarterback sensation Brock Purdy, who only stepped up as a starter last season in his rookie year, has brought belief back to the city as it seeks revenge for its previous Super Bowl appearance in 2019 – a defeat to the Chiefs.

‘It’ll probably be the Chiefs,’ said another. ‘Mahomes has been there many times, so he’ll be calmer.’

While one simply stated: ‘It’s Patrick Mahomes, and Patrick does Patrick. He’s unstoppable’.

Whatever plays out both on the field and in the stands at Allegiant Stadium on Sunday, it promises to be a night of football for the ages.
